This is going to be a long one, just warnin' you.
Summertime is almost here. I really wish I had the summer off, but that just ain't happening. Come, June 18th the Summer Program at school will be in full swing. Field trips, bounce houses, and petting zoos galore. The best part? It's non-academic. So, I don't have to plan a darn thing. Hallelujah! This upcoming week is going to be a PACKED one. Chris' birthday is on Tuesday, I start swimming at the Rec on Wednesday, rehearsal dinner on Thursday, rehearsal on Friday, Matt & Lauren's wedding on Saturday and Mother's Day on Sunday. I enjoy being busy but I have been so tired lately. I wish I could just sleep through the week. How blissful would that be?
You heard me right, I am going to start swimming this week. My friend Amanda and I have decided to join the Rec Center and start swimming together on a daily basis. Let me tell you, I am taking this SERIOUSLY. I bought a new swimsuit, a swim cap (bright pink!) and goggles. I am going to look like an old lady showing up for water aerobics class and I couldn't care less. I've never really been a strong swimmer so the first couple days should prove to be interesting and probably amusing to watch. I know I have bad form and I although I may feel like I look like Ariel racing throughout the water, I know I'll look a hot mess. And, thats okay. Practice makes perfect.
We went over to my parents house today for Chris' birthday dinner. My mom cooked an authentic Puerto Rican meal & I am still full from it. White Rice, black beans, empanadas and platanos. Ohhh, it was heaven. No matter how hard I try, my beans never turn out as well as my Mom's.
I had a really great weekend! I met up with my cousin Kat for breakfast at Mt. Trashmore on Saturday and her (almost!) dog Reesy tagged along. Met up with Amanda for lunch at Tropical Smoothie & ended the day with pizza and a movie with my guy. Yesterday was our 6 month anniversary. Part of me feels like it's flown by, but I also feel like we've been married for much longer than that. I can't imagine not coming home to him or not waking up next to him every morning. He is such an amazing husband and friend. He's selfless and genuine and that's so hard to find these days. I know I'm gushing, but trust me. My guy is worth gushing about.
We've been through a lot our first 6 months of marriage. About two weeks after we got married, my grandpa died and I wound up traveling to New York with my siblings for the funeral. In December, Chris & I stepped down from being Youth Pastors at our former church. After earnestly praying, we made the tough decision to leave that church. Chris was out of work for a month and that was really tough. Chris landed a job in January and then was sick with a fever for a week. That was a scary time for me. I had never really taken care of anyone before and I was so worried I would do the "wrong" thing and make him even worse. But, he pulled through like a trooper. :) My Dad had a heart attack in March and that hit me hard. Both of my Dad's parents died from heart attacks before they were 50 years old. My Dad turned 51 this year & I was so grateful to spend the day with him celebrating his life. I think that's when my mindset started to change...so many people reached out to my family after my Dad's heart attack. We got phone calls, countless hospital visits, meals, you name it. This may sound cheesy, but it was so beautiful. To see people come together like that, it really touched me. People that I thought would reach out did not. And, while that hurt, it clarified a lot of things for me. I'm learning to treasure the relationships that I have. And, not dwell on certain relationships that have gone stagnant. I believe that people can be in your life for only a season. While others, are in your life for a reason. Those are the people that care about the good, the bad and the ugly. They don't just waltz into your lives on special occasions and birthdays. They invest as much time into you as you do into them. And, those are the relationships that I'm going to go all out for.
A lot of people perceive me to be quiet, conservative and somewhat reserved. I want you to know that even though I'm quiet, I have a lot to say. I want you to know while I may be "conservative" that doesn't mean I'm ignorant and that I see life through rose colored glasses. I want you to know that though I can be reserved, don't think I can't let my hair down. I am a stronger person than what you give me credit for.
Fearlessly,
Kay
